The European Bioplastics Company said that the global production capacity of bioplastics will increase from about 2.050 million tons in 2017 to about 2.440 million tons in 2022, and biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoate esters (PHA) will grow fastest.
Packaging is still the largest application area of bioplastics, with nearly 60% (1.2 million tons) market in 2017. Asia is the main producer of bioplastics and currently has a market share of more than 50%.
Europe accounts for 20% of output, but by 2022 it will rise to 25%.
